Police hot weather warning as girl, 12, drowns in river

Police have issued a warning over cooling off in the hot weather after a 12-year-old girl drowned in a river.

Detective Inspector Andrew Naismith said: "With the warmer weather, it's tempting to go into the water to cool off, but I'd like to remind everyone of the dangers of playing near or swimming in rivers, lakes and reservoirs and would strongly urge against this."

The girl was last seen swimming in the River Irwell in Bury at 7.55pm, Greater Manchester police said.

Underwater search teams were called in and discovered the body of the child.

DI Naismith added: "This is an incredibly tragic incident in which a young girl has lost her life, and my thoughts are with her family at this devastating time.

"We have a team of detectives working on this, but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances at this time."

Specially trained officers are supporting the child's family, police said.

The police warning over taking precautions in the hot weather comes before the UK is set to experience the hottest day of the year so far this weekend.

A short hot spell will see the mercury climb across the country, mirroring the heatwave escalating across much of Europe, with temperatures reaching a maximum of 34C (93.2CF) in London and the east of England on Saturday.
